The High-level event “National Contributions to SDG 7 and Sustainable Energy for All. Astana EXPO-2017: Exploring New Horizons” with the presentation of Astana EXPO-2017 took place on May 31, 2016, at the UN headquarters in New York. Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the UN, Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), Office of the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for the Least Developed Countries, Developing Countries, Landlocked and Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS ), and Office of Initiative “Sustainable Energy For All» (SE4All) participated in its organization. Kazakhstan National Company Astana-EXPO-2017, Nazarbayev University as well as the International Secretariat of G-Global contributed to the success of this meeting as well.
The participants, including ambassadors and experts from the permanent missions to the United Nations and representatives of NGO’s, academia and business exchanged their views on coordination of the efforts of the UN, national governments, business, civil society and other stakeholders to achieve the goal of universal energy access by 2030.
There were the following speakers during the High-Level: H.E. Mr. Gyan Chandra Acharya, United Nations Under-Secretary-General; H.E. Mr. Lenni Montiel, Assistant-Secretary-General for Economic Development (UN-DESA); Ms. Rachel Kyte, Chief Executive Officer and Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All); Dr. Kanat Baigarin, Vice-President for Innovation and Science, Nazarbayev University; Dr. Murat Karimsakov, Deputy Head, G-Global International Secretariat, and representatives of civil society, scientific and private cector.
Representative of Astana EXPO-2017 Mr. Ruslan Zhemkov made a insight presentation on the preparations to the Exhibition and on further usage of the constructed objects. Kazakhstan national policy regarding energy efficiency, alternative sources of energy and providing universal access to modern energy sources was also presented to the participants.
There was also provided information on the initiative of the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev on the opening of the International Centre for the development of green technologies and investment projects under the auspices of the UN based on the EXPO-2017 infrastructure.
During the discussion participants of the High-level event noted that Astana EXPO 2017 ” Future Energy” is real contribution of Kazakhstan to the achievement of the agreed global energy goals.
