Kazakhstan underscores role of multilateralism in achieving peace

The recent hydrogen bomb test by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has been labelled “unacceptable” by a senior official from one of the few countries worldwide that have been affected by nuclear weapons.

Yerzhan Ashikbayev, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, said this action undermines international efforts to achieve peace and security.

The Central Asia country, which formerly was part of the old Soviet Union, is behind the International Day against Nuclear Tests, observed annually on 29 August.

The date commemorates the 1991 closing of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site which operated for some 40 years in northeast Kazakhstan.

Dianne Penn spoke with Mr Ashikbayev during his visit to UN Headquarters earlier this month.
