September 2, 2015, A ceremony of dedication of the commemorative plague – Tree of Peace and Unity – took place at the UN Headquarters. It was a joint initiative of 46 countries, including Kazakhstan.
Dedication of a commemorative plaque symbolizes the two significant dates: 70 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe and the 70th anniversary of the end of the war in Asia and the Pacific. One of the main messages of this event which coincides with the 4th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments is to highlight the role of parliaments in preventing conflicts and safeguarding international peace and security.
Welcoming remarks were made by honoured guests: President of Inter-Parliamentary Union Saber Chowdhury, Deputy Secretary-General His Excellency Jan Elliasson and Acting President of the General Assembly of 69th session María Cristina Perceval.
